Injectables

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a gel-like substance that is found in the tissue space, the synovial fluid of joints, and the vitreous humor of the eye and acts as a binding, lubricating, and pretective agent. Due to these specifications of HA it used both as a viscosupplementation for treating osteoarthritis, an ophthalmic viscoelastic product (e.g. in cataract surgeries), and as facial aesthetic implant.

Intra-articular injection of HA can decrease symptoms of osteoarthritis of the knee. HA's are large glucosminoglycans in synovial fluid. They have high but variable molecular weight and viscosity, and injecting them into the knee joint is aimed at providing lubrication and shock absorption.

HA-based viscoelastic solutions are used during cataract surgeries of the eye to help retain the shape of the anterior chamber of the eye and prevent other delicate structures of the eye from being damaged by untrasonic vibrations.

HA also has features that makes it an attractive substance for dermal filler use, such as its ability to bind to large amounts of water, its natural presence in the skin, and its low potential for adverse reactions.

HyaCare® has no residual endotoxins from its host strain
Novozymes Biopolymer has created a new, purer form of HA based on Bacillus subtilis, one of the best characterized, gram-positive micro-organisms. As a result, HyaCare is the only sodium hyaluronate in the world that features such low protein levels and no endotoxins from the host strain.

HyaCare boasts the same efficacy as traditional sodium hyaluronate yet with vastly improved safety, including significantly reduced risk of transmittance of animal spongiform encephalopathy.

World’s first dedicated cGMP HA facility
Drawing on our patented technology, we have designed a dedicated large-scale cGMP production facility, scheduled to start production of pharmaceutical-grade HA ingredients in 2011. Pilot process samples will be available already by early 2009.

To plan for capacity and to ensure efficient market entry, Novozymes Biopolymer is currently entering into strategic supply agreements with selected pharmaceutical manufacturers. This allows our partners to become “first movers” in the use of HyaCare.
